In reference to the new audio episodes. I think I'm over it. Either that, or it's just that as much as I love Captain Jack (and JB), it's just not Torchwood without Owen, Tosh, and Ianto. Like Miracle Day wasn't really Torchwood, and even COE seemed to be the characters names played by the same actors, but actually different characters, if that makes sense. Everyone was so OOC in COE, it did not seem like Torchwood to me at all. Hellooo fan fiction. I am so there. Oddly enough, I am perfectly fine reading fics where there is no Gwen. She never seems to add anything but annoyance, in my mind. Like a strand of celery stuck in your teeth (read that somewhere), you desperately want it to go away, but it just stays and stays and stays and makes you crazy in the interim. But that's just me.

I just remembered this one. He was sad when they found him and he had to go back home, if I remember correctly. It was a really good episode. There were very few that weren't up to the mark, I think.

That is true, in season 3 there was an episode where he was stranded on a planet for three months. One of my favouritest.
I was, however, talking about a fanfiction where he was lost for years and became a member of this new society, when in the beginning he couldn't even walk, talk or eat properly. A little boy was it that helped him making slow steps towards healing.

I could give you the link if you are interested, but it is loooooong! 24 chapters if I recall correctly.

I am interested, thanks. If you even see this reply in this jumbled mess of a post. LOLOL I love long fics. I was never really into reading short stories, and that is what most fanfics are, short stories. I read them, because it's Torchwood, but long, book-length, multi-chapters are my favorite thing.

I did set up to get an e-mail notification whenever there is a comment/reply, no worries ;) But there was a time when they stopped coming in because LJ had gotten on some e-mail servers spam lists. They would turn up weeks later or not at all. THAT was a mess!

The title of the fic is "Living Lives of quiet desperation" and this is chapter 1: http://www.jackfic.net/archive/archive/5/LLoQD_Prologue_Ch1.html

I just saw there are 30 chapters indeed. Sadly one is not always linked to the next and the link which has the complete story is broken.

So unless you want me to link all 30 chapters in this comment, all I can give you is this list of all stories on Jackfic that start with L, and then you would need to search the list for all that have the title "Living Lives of quiet desperation".

To make things more complicated, the chapters are not even in the right order, but numbered and should all be there.

Of course it might be easier if I just sent you my complete downloaded HTML document by e-mail or something...

The story itself has three different levels. You may be a bit confused at the beginning but you'll soon figure it out. If not, ask me ;) I regard this still as one of the best fics I have ever read. Thinking about it now, I'd even say there are some similarities with "What never should be", as Jack is also going through a hellish time while recovering and being frustrated that his body is simply not doing the things he wants it to do and it is very difficult to see at times. The difference here is though, that it is not mean guards who were doing it to him, he rather is in a facility where they care for him - but in a simple way, as they don't think he could do any better. Makes you even think how we care for our elderly or disabled people, only covering their basic needs by feeding and cleaning them, but nothing out of the ordinary or special?

Did I not ever reply to this? Sorry. Thanks for doing this.

You did. Somewhere down there in the mess we created ;) But at the time you only had read the first part, not sure if you went on after this. I guess it would be easier if I sent you the whole file as one big story instead of hunting for the next chapter (especially since there are not always links to the next one at the end of the previous one)

If you already have it as a file, that would be great. I can't even remember if I read all of it or not. I can hunt out the chapters if you don't have a file, I've gotten pretty good at that. Some people's journals are just a mishmash. I wish everyone posted on fanfic.net or A03. Makes things so much easier to find. Even Teaspoon is better than random posts here and there on LJ. Why people don't link their chapters is a mystery, too. I do love fan fic. I was reading something a couple days ago where Jack was telling Ianto how he felt several times, and was upset because Ianto "didn't return the sediment". Proof-reading is a good thing people. Stuff like that cracks me up, but really takes you out of the story, too. There was one where every time the writer meant 'definitely', they wrote 'defiantly'. Every single time, and there were quite a few times. Or 'procine' instead of 'porcelain'. I am a bad person. I know. LOL

Haha the sediment one is a good one! Did you see when I posted the picture with the mummy? My brain is also working in a weird way ;) My friend had meant her mom actually. But in the UK it's mummy.

The story was posted on Jackfic.net (which is now Jackfic.org), a page only for Jack-centered stories. Long before fanfic.net or AO3 existed. We had some really good writers there. This one is a very long story so I doubt you read it till the end already. If you had, it certainly would have stuck with you and made you think for days.

I wrote to the author afterwards and she confirmed that she actually was a doctor - that's why the medical stuff felt so good and real in here. I mean, it was aliens that tried to heal him and got it wrong maybe. How helpless would we be if we tried to heal a grey Roswell alien without any knowledge how their bodies work?

Oh, I hate the "defiantly". I also don't understand why Americans insist writing "brought" when they mean "bought". There is no R in the word "buy"!

It's amusing, but kind of sad. Sometimes I wonder at the quality of education people get, especially here in the US, where teachers are criminally underpaid. You get what you pay for, and a good teacher has to be really dedicated to want to work for peanuts, so to speak. Priorities are so skewed. Throw a ball and get millions. Teach a child and barely get a living wage. Most teachers I've know have had to work a second job over the summer to make ends meet. It's a disgrace.
