The Friday Five

The Friday Five
1. Are you a happy person?
I am. I get down now and then, and I had clinical depression for a long time, but underneath all that, I was still happy in some sense.

2. What is happiness for you?
Just the ability to enjoy and appreciate everything, I think. Not being angry, or sad, or bitter and resentful. Acceptance, maybe. In zen, you learn that the cause of suffering is wanting things to be a certain way and making yourself miserable when they are not. Hanging on to things that are impermanent, and everything is impermanent. Change is the only constant, and if you cannot adapt to that, you will be miserable, regardless of circumstances. So it's kind of just going with the flow and enjoying life.

3. What do you think is the color for happiness?
Yellow is for me a very cheery color, so I guess I'd say that. Earth colors. Yellow, orange, greens.

4. Do you think that happiness lies within you? Or does it depend upon other people and external things?
I always say I was born with the happy gene. I think happiness comes from within. You can have everything or nothing and still be miserable or still be happy. You can have everything and lose it and still be happy. You may be sad for a time, but underneath, the happiness is still alive and well. Things make life more exciting, or more comfortable, or easier, this includes people, too. You can lose loved ones, and still have happiness in your life.

5. Can money buy happiness?
No. Money can make life easier, not happier. If you can't be happy with nothing, having everything is only going to make things different, not happier.
