Story Question

Does anyone know if 'Start As You Mean To Go On' by http://tanarian.livejournal.com/, was ever finished anywhere? It started out with Jack coming back from TYTNW only to announce that he was going to marry Gwen. The Doctor took Iantooff in the Tardis, there were a couple of adventures, and then....???? I want to know what happened, darn it. Anyone?

It's continued as the three-parter My Word, You Do Look Queer

Thanks. That doesn't resolve the story, and checking forward on the site, it's just a real mess of drabbles, and seemingly unrelated bits, and IDEK. Disappointing.

Like so many things, it probably didn't get finished completely, sad and frustrating though it is. I can only find one other short piece set in the same 'verse, which you've probably already found. This one, I Don't Do Domsticity.

Wish I could be more help.

This is why I normally don't read a story until I know it's finished, but I had apparently saved this a long time ago, and totally forgot that it wasn't complete. Found it in my 'sent these to my Kindle' folder. Yes, that is not it's actual name. LOL I don't know why people don't just write the damn thing and THEN post it. It's very, very frustrating.

Speaking for myself, I generally do wait until something is complete before posting. Themn I sometimes write sequels ;)

The only reason I'm posting Through Time and Space before it's finished is because I sort of have to. Each chapter is written for a challenge on fan_flashworks, so it has to be posted there as soon as it's ready. I wasn't expecting it to be as long as it is, so when I was a few chapters in, I started posting to my journal. Now 11 chapter are on my journal, I have 20 up at fan_flashworks, I've nearly finished chapter 21, and I think there will only be another two or possibly three chapters to go. How soon it gets finished is all going to depend on what the next few challenges are and whether they work for the story. The last one didn't fit with what I wanted to do so I had to write something else for it. It's a nerve-wracking way of writing though.

Yes, but you're writing to a purpose, not just, "Oh, I think I'll start a story and see where it goes or if anyone reads it. I may or not get bored with it and walk away, leaving my readers frustrated and upset. Oh, well."

Yes, it is one of those things that bugs the heck out of. Guess I can't complain, though, since I can't even write a paragraph, let alone a complete story. :) But I have been left hanging too many times when reading a really good story that just...stops. Never to be taken up and finished. Very disheartening, so now I wait til it's all posted. There are rare exceptions to that, but usually, waiting is better.

I can imagine that must be a difficult way to do a story. You never know what you're going to be required to write about, instead of having your own story planned out in advance. Clever writers are clever. I am not one of those. LOL

Neither am I. See, I'm no good at planning out a story. I knew someday I wanted to do one where Ianto comes out of the Rift elsewhere and has to find Jack, but then I saw this prompt on fan_flashworks and something in my head went *PING* Before that, a major part of the story didn't even exist, and I wasn't ready to start something so major anyway, but I just had to. Then the next challenge prompt was perfect to continue the story, so then I thought, well, instead of trying to plot this out, why don't I just see where the challenge prompts take me? Before I knew it I was knee deep in a seriously involved story with aliens and other planets and... The whole thing is crazy, but I'm having a lot of fun with it even though my brain is getting frazzled, lol!

Yeah, I've been reading great fics before that just ended, it's infuriating. Sometimes I wish I could finish myself, but the one I'd most like to see finished was by a writer WAY better than I am.

On the other hand, that way better writer gave up the story. And you may not think you're as good, but readers might disagree. Wonder how that would work if you actually finished someone else's abandoned story? Maybe so long as you made it clear that they wrote this part, and you finished up with that part, so they couldn't say you'd stolen it. Or just pass it around to those people you know won't tell. LOL

I couldn't do that because the writer was a friend of mine whose journal vanished suddenly. I have no idea what happened to her, I know she'd been having RL problems for a long time and no time to write, I always hoped things would improve and she'd get it finished, she hoped that too, but I guess it wasn't to be. =(

Oh, that's too bad. There used to be a writer I liked, way back when. Suddenly, they were just gone. Can't remember the name now, but I've always wondered what happened. Why did their journal just vanish? You have to hope that nothing awful happened in real life, that maybe they just decided the whole thing wasn't for them anymore, but then you'd think they'd give some sort of notice, or maybe not. It's unsettling, to say the least, and there's always that niggling in the back of the mind that you hope they're okay.

Yeah, I really hope she is and just realised that life wasn't going to allow for fic writing anymore. It's sad when people's journals remain but they never update anymore too =(

There are a number of people I don't know what happened to them. I guess that's the downside of online friendships.
