Oh, all right

More thinky thoughts. It's not that I dislike women now, but when I was in school I did not like most of the girls. It's like humanity. Individually, I like people, but as a species, we leave a very very lot to be desired.

Anyway, back to thinky thoughts of the current moment. I am reading cupidbow's LJ posts from last year and there are some really good conversations there. Right now they are discussing CoE, the show from which I still have not recovered.

I think that despite some really lame plot holes, it was an excellent story. I remember thinking at the time, "Wow, those people really must hate their government to write them that way". It was a story that really made you think.

Where it went wrong, in my opinion, was that in order to get it made, RTD shoe-horned Torchwood into a completely unrelated story-line.. He used the characters names and physical presence, but not the characters themselves. They were stand-ins for the characters he would have had if he hadn't need to use Torchwood to get his story on the air. It would have been really great tv, and we would all still be talking about it in wonder, if he had only not pretended it belonged in the Torchwood 'verse.

Changing the characters of the team to fit the plot, off-handedly killing off a favorite character in a completely idiotic manner (Hey, it's aliens. Let's go yell at them. That'll show 'em!) Really?

So for many fans, the complete decimation of the Torchwood universe overwhelmed the really awesome story about how people rationalize being inhumane to people they deem lesser than themselves. How sometimes government has no morality, ethics, or conscience when it comes to serving their own interests. How inhuman humanity can be.

I can't sit back and consider the message RTD was trying to give us without it being edged out by my complete devastation over the destruction of Jack and the stupid, stupid way he chose to kill Ianto. I lost all respect for the man on reading his reactions to fans feelings on the subject. I don't think I will ever forgive him for his arrogant dismissal of people who invested part of themselves in HIS writing. If you don't care about your fans or the integrity of your characters, get yourself an LJ blog and make it your own private world. Friend-locked and with no friends.

I'm too old to be this distressed by a tv show, but I am. So sue me. I am still just as angry as I was a year ago.

EDIT Some are saying Jack was a monster long before CoE, and he was a jackass and treated Ianto horribly most of the time, but still....it was fun. It was 'can't wait for next week' stuff. CoE was 'Just kill me now. Life sucks, then you die. What's the point?' You could hope that Jack would get a clue eventually in Torchwood, but CoE not only put paid to that, it killed the show altogether. Season 4 is not going to be 'my' Torchwood, and I am not going to waste a second of my life giving it any attention, in spite of being a Barrowman fan. Sorry, JB.

You've probably realised that I only found your journal because you commented on one of my stories, but this comment is so true. I would have loved CoE if it had been a stand-alone sci fi/political drama. Instead, I was one of the many who felt that it had nothing to do with MY Torchwood. It was made worse by the fact that I only saw the 1st 2 episodes and then went on holiday. To sub Saharan Africa: they don't show TW there- heck a male/male kiss would be enough to get you lynched in some places. 2-3 wks later I came back (to a pre ordered DVD- never done that before.)and found that what I'd always seen as a great midweek, fun show had been destroyed. Since then I've been a bit obssessed with fun and fluff...
I personally thik that, however entertaining they try to make TW4, it'll just never have any of that almost naive, fun about it.

Fun and fluff is good. I am angsted out, I think. I read the rest of your stuff except Rebecca, just cannot do the Manderley stuff. I liked all of it. My Ianto made me laugh. I remember that movie from the late show when I was very young. Saved your blog in my 'To Read' folder which I check daily for updates. Thanks for sharing your writing with the untalented masses. Otherwise known as me.

Glad it's not just me! If I want angst, I'll watch John Pilger documentaries or something. If I wanted cracky, fun sci fi I USED to watch TW.... ah! happy days! And, for the record, that's the last time I pre order a DVD, even if I am going on holiday. It was a complete waste of £20, not just because of the senseless and stupid way they finished off Ianto, but because they basically killed a TV show that could have had at least one more series before it became miserable and angsty.
I'm happy you enjoyed My Man Ianto and you've been enjoying my other stuff- I never really did any writing until CoE made me really angry about the whole show!

Well, I hope you keep on writing. I am enjoying it. We still have two good sci-fi shows here, Eureka and Warehouse 13, which are both quirky and fun, but nothing at all like Torchwood. (Insert sad sigh here)
