Reading and Recs

Last night I finished a quite long story that was so saccharinely sweet that I not only wanted to gag, I skipped through large parts of it just to get to the end without missing anything crucial. I won't mention any names, because the author clearly put in a lot of work and was obviously proud of it. It just was so not to my taste. Anyway, it sent me looking through my saved folder for something to take away the super-sweet aftertaste, and I was reminded of my two all-time favorite stories, which I am now going to rec here. Yay, me. I may have rec'd them before, but oh, well. These are both AU, by the way.

One of the first stories I ever read, and immediately fell in love with, is 'Guard Them, And Him Within', by etharei It is just riveting. Not our world, not our Jack, and yet....

The second one is quite long, and continues on, but the first 45 chapters are the real story. This is one of the best fics I have ever read, and I keep going back to it all the time. Parts of it are hard to read, and very sad, but it shows both Jack and Ianto as the courageous men they are. I just love this one. It's 'What Never Should Be', by blucougar57

I love fanfiction.net, too, because you can download an entire story in one fell swoop, convert it, and send it on to Kindle. Technology, it's a good thing.

First thing first: Happy New Year! I hope it's not too late.

I agree with you, "What never should be" series is fantastic and I reread it several times. Each time with the same pleasure.

Could you tell me which software you're using. I'm considering the idea of buying a Kindle and it would be very helpful.

Thanks.:D

1. First you need a 'Send to Kindle' app for your browser. I am addicted to Firefox, because EXTENSIONS. LOL Just google for the app.
2. Go to www.FanFictionDownloader.net, and save that. One time only, unless there is an update. It can be buggy at times, but you can usually get it to work. Be sure to open the menu and set where you want the file to go.
3. Open the story's first page on Fanfiction.net, copy the address, click the downloader icon (I keep it in the taskbar), paste in the address (it may show up automatically), click 'check and download' and wait for it to happen.
4. Save as 'text' when the window opens up. Go to the folder you saved it in, (open file and clean it up if you want,) then:
5. Right click, click 'send to Kindle' and then 'done'.
6. Being a bit fanatical about organization, I have a folder for things I've sent but not read and I move everything there after I've done the 'send' bit, and a folder for things I've read and want to keep.
If I hate it, I just delete it from the first folder, if I love it, I go into that folder and move it to the keeper one. Once you've got the software in place, it takes very little time to go through the whole process. Much less than writing, or even reading, about it.
I have other tricks if the story is NOT on FF.net, if you're interested. Hope this works for you.

I love my Kindle, btw. I've had it for over two years, and use it nearly every day. I have the keyboard one, but they don't make it anymore. I bought the other one (on screen keyboard) in case mine dies, and I've tried the Paperwhite. Paperwhite has advantages, but I do not like the touch-screen operation. I much prefer the side page turner buttons. Just FYI. Since I'm on a roll here with the advice, I also bought a Fire (nooo, gave it away), a Fire HD (better, but clunky,) and just got a Nexus 7. Nexus 7 for the win, in my opinion. I am in love with that thing, I swear. LOL

Re: Thank you !
Oh! You are very welcome. I can get wordy, and always think I've said too much. Really glad I could be of help. Enjoy reading. I think if you are a big reader, you would love a Kindle. Takes up very little room, you can even borrow books from your library for it if they are set up for that. You can borrow books from Amazon, too, but just one a month. Weird policy. Anyway, yay, downloading. LOL
